Sing Like a Birdie

WHY DO WE SING IN CHURCH?
Those of us who grew up in church most likely never participated in a service in which some form of singing was not included. Why is that?
Various blogs will give you numerous reasons for why we include singing in our services, but I believe we can narrow it down to 4 reasons.
The bible implores us to sing. “Sing to the Lord a new song” is found in many scriptures such as Psalm 96:1, Psalm 98:1, and Psalm 149:1.
Singing is a way of proclaiming the truth about the character of the Living God (I Chronicles 16:23, 2 Chronicles 20:21, Psalm 7:17
Singing is a form of prayer. Notice that many hymns end in “Amen”, just like our prayers. We can truly pray through song. Music connects our heart with our emotions and can open us up to a conversation with God. And prayer is just that: a conversation with God.
Singing is a way of lifting praise (Psalm 33:1, Psalm 68:4, Psalm 96:2). We communicate our thankfulness for the love, blessings, grace, and mercy afforded us by God. We praise Him for who He is and what He does in our lives.
We let God know that we are unified in the Gospel when we sing together in church.
I named this blog “Sing like a birdie,” because that is what my husband always says to me as I head out to church worship team rehearsal.
So…what if we all don’t sing like a birdie? That shouldn’t keep us from letting what’s in our heart and soul rise up in praise to the Lord. He wants to hear us…each of us!
